Adrift in my Happy Place

This painting originated as a sketch in my sketchbook. The general layout and concept seemed fit for a more detailed contemplation...so I decided to re-envision it as a digital painting. First I introduced the sketch as a multiply layer in PhotoShop. I develop a general color scheme by placing colors into their own individual layers...this gives me greater control if I need to make corrections. After introducing shading and highlight layers I flatten the image and start painting over it...to give it a more "painterly" feel.
I try to keep some vestige of reality by using references as often as possible... this and lighting guides me the most through out the process.
You can view the original sketch in my gallery.

Sea Serpent

This is a chunk taken from my private portfolio...it is an illustration of a sea serpent from a children's picture book I am working on.
I sketched the inital image in graphite on a notebook pad (during a faculty meeting) and then scanned it into the computer...of course later I cleaned, edited, and colored it in PhotoShop.
I plan on developing further images ASAP, of course i will post those as time permits.

Paradigm imago

Like most of all my work it began from a sketchbook image...in fact this is a conglomeration of several sketches.

The primary character...a wooly booger...stems from a concept for a children's book and a poem I wrote...the other images are merely derived from a sort of Dada randomization...a choice derived from compositional interest and surreal apropos.

I begin by scanning the image at high resolution, and then changing the drawing into a multiply layer...underneath this sketch layer all the color is situated. Every object is placed on an individual layer…thus allowing me to make color changes on the fly…using the hue/saturation pull-down menu. I utilize a stringent layer and layer-set hierarchy to insure that I can make changes in an efficient manner and production is ultimately sped up. If anyone wants changes later on I can adjust each individual color with ease and expeditiously.
I ad shading on a separate multiple layer and highlights on a screen layer…again these safeguards afford me much more flexibility later.

Last of all I collapse all the layers and save this image out under a new name…this is where I make changes to emulate a more painterly effect. Then “voila” I am finished.
